If you want to enable Facebook Chat for Pidgin in Ubuntu you need to install Facebook Chat for Pidgin plugin.This is a Facebook chat plugin for Pidgin and libpurple messengers. It connects to the new Facebook Chat IM service without the require for an API key.
Presently the plugin can log into the Facebook servers, catch the buddy list, send/receive messages, add/remove friends, get notifications, look for for Facebook friends and set your Facebook status.

First you have to download the plugin using the following command.
wget http://pidgin-facebookchat.googlecode.com/files/pidgin-facebookchat-1.38.deb

To install this plugin type the command:

sudo dpkg -i pidgin-facebookchat-1.38.deb

After installation you need to restart Pidgin! Then a Facebook Chat option appearers in your accounts manager dialog.
