Unity 2d team has released Unity 2D which is light and fast and doesn't require 3D graphics enabled on your desktop.
Unity 2D (Qt) PPA Released For Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04


The Unity Qt (2D) PPA currently holds packages for both Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal.

Install Unity 2D (Qt) in Ubuntu 10.10:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unity-2d-team/unity-2d-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install unity-qt-default-settings
